A beautiful Sunday on the beach with Michelle out in Caloundra, the start of the Sunshine Coast. We had a picnic, she’s headed up to stay with Jackie for a few more days - a week actually, and will be back in Brisbane by about a week tomorrow. She’s got a place that she’ll be moving into on the 25th that’s one suburb away from mine. The thing about Brisbane is that the right place opens up for you if you can wait long enough.

Sometimes this pen writes well on the waxy part of the page, sometimes it doesn’t write as well. Good day yesterday, 3 signups and a call back from a software company, and Michelle came over. She’s moving in to a place on Saturday, but Jackies place is a bit too party all the time.

On my way to work out in the Capalaba shopping centre, a fair way out of town. It may be the last or second last day working for Greenpeace, and unfortunately not because I’ve found something better. After a few days of pestering people on the streets, I still haven’t found my stride and got them signing up, which is putting pressure on Lee, the guy I report to. He looked a fair bit more stressed each time I saw him, his whole team is under performing, so he’s got to be results oriented with all of them, me included. Not that he’s told me this directly - results oriented is not his style at all - but you can see it in the way he is.

Were the 90’s less politically significant on the global arena, was there a quiet period from the mid to the late 90’s, or was it just that Clinton was better at hiding the things the US was doing, Y2K was the big global crisis, and I had my head and political awareness down?

Just finished watching a movie called “Brassed Off” that was the source of samples for some Chumbawumba tracks: “I used to think that music mattered, but it doesn’t bollocks, not compared to our people matter!” From Tubthumping. The line actually comes right towards the end of the movie, but I recognized the voice almost as soon as the character showed up.

First day of real work yesterday, actually on the street talking with people. No sign-ups, but good stopping rates. It’s fun to be out there, getting paid to meet people. Met some other of the people who are frontliners as well, cool people, energetic and enthusiastic.

Read a book about change called “Who moved my cheese.” It talks about 4 characters in a maze who look for cheese. Sniff and Scurry are mice, and Hem and Haw are little people. They find a big stash of cheese and then when it’s all gone, Sniff and Scurry head off to look for more while Hem and Haw, having become used to finding their cheese in one place, go through all sorts of heartache. Hem ends up hemmed in by his though patterns and refuses to go look for other cheese, while Haw learns to laugh at himself and gets up the gumption to find new cheese.

Got the job, would have been very surprised if I hadn’t. They were disappointed that I would only be able to work for 3 months with my visa. Seemed keen on getting me into the organization. Gives me a chance to hone some very direct sales skills. I do want to move to a bit more of a training, lower intensity job at some point.

Most of the way through a day packed with information about the things that Greenpeace does. I know a lot of the stuff already, but the other trainee doesn’t, so we’re taking our time.
I’m dealing with emotions, which means I’m being more open with my emotions, which makes me more emotional. To me, I sound whiney. “I’m so far from everyone I know, I can’t connect with people here the same way as I do back home, etc, ad nauseam.” Fact is, I’m doing good right now. Got a place, job (as of tomorrow), I’m getting excited about this upcoming interview and opportunity to work for Greenpeace. Maybe, hopefully, get a bit more involved. Who knows what’ll happen.
