Were the 90′s less politically significant on the global arena, was there a quiet period from the mid to the late 90′s, or was it just that Clinton was better at hiding the things the US was doing, Y2K was the big global crisis, and I had my head and political awareness down?
The 80′s had rampant consumerism to act as a foil for environmental action. In the 90′s, the social mainstream was dissatisfied – punk, garage, grunge, indie rock became mainstream. Cynicism became the back stage pass – a generation fed messages of impending death and destruction gave up instead of joining up in the solutions.
Now. Don’t know about now. The last hurrah of an oil dependant culture? But if I don’t feel good about my lifestyle, there’s a pill I can take that’ll help me feel better. Actually, it only stops me from feeling. And since I don’t feel bad, there’s no reason to take action.
I think the myth of unlimited resources is still firmly entrenched in our psyche. “Who moved my cheese” addresses change, but only barely touched on seeing problems before they happen, in this case, realizing that we’re fast running out of cheese and that there isn’t any more, anywhere. We’re going to have to learn to live off nuts and berries.
It’s well past the time we should have woken up, but that snooze button is still getting pressed.
