Read a book about change called “Who moved my cheese.” It talks about 4 characters in a maze who look for cheese. Sniff and Scurry are mice, and Hem and Haw are little people. They find a big stash of cheese and then when it’s all gone, Sniff and Scurry head off to look for more while Hem and Haw, having become used to finding their cheese in one place, go through all sorts of heartache. Hem ends up hemmed in by his though patterns and refuses to go look for other cheese, while Haw learns to laugh at himself and gets up the gumption to find new cheese.

Sniff looks for cheese by sniffing, Scurry looks for cheese by scurrying. While I think that the expectation is that us big people will associate with one of the little people, and strive to be like Haw. I currently associate and strive to be more like Sniff – going in the direction that smells interesting. Both Hem and Haw overanalyzed everything – Haw made personal discoveries that have already been well integrated into my personal belief system.
Yesterday our group interview had a discussion about the role of education in success. Actually, it was a debate, pro- and anti- the statement that education is the key to success. One of the pro-education comments was that without education our society would be likely tribes, with tribal warfare and misunderstandings. There are so many presumptions and missed facts in this statement that I have to elaborate:
- Modern methods of warfare have caused a slaughter of unprecedented magnitude. That’s proportionately, straight numbers, fighters and civilians, and environmentally.
- Modern education methods do less to foster a sense of belonging and responsibility to others than most cultural, family linked education systems.
There’s more, but I’m tired.
