A few late nights and not so late mornings, a few phone calls and a few more days have gone by. A recent morning wake-up was Maita, another volunteer here, outside my tent.
“Brendan, I have a favour to ask…” She’s been good at asking and also at being thankful upon completion and has provided a number of interesting ones to date.
“I’m sorry if I woke you,” she’s also good at apologizing for any inconvenience, actual or perceived, or even slightly possibly imagined, “but the others said I should.” That’s probably Michelle’s doing, or maybe Richard’s.
“I need you to get into my car – I’ve locked both sets of keys inside.” Now that’s a way to start the day!
“Give me two minutes and I’m there!” I answer, and then start to get ready as she preemptively thanks me. It seems she’s hoping to head out today, early, if possibly.
And not 15 minutes later I’ve opened the car door without keys, adding even more to the myth that I can do just about anything that gets thrown at me.
It’s just that if I get stuck doing things one way, I’ll move and try another, take the time to step back and discover these other ways.
The heat continues and I’m wearing a sarong regularly (when not doing day work), swimming, eating, drinking some liquids and going to bed late at night so that it’s cooled down.
